Magna Carta Holy Grail, Yeezus, and Real Spit
So yesterday I had the pleasure of picking up and listening to both Jay-Z's and Kanye West's new albums and I've got a bit to say about them. First my thought's on Jay-Z's new album.
So I've listened to "Magna Carta Holy Grail" and I did thoroughly enjoy it. Certainly not Jay-Z's best (not in the least), but with weak competition out there putting out wack albums that go double plastic, this is solid. As a whole the album works together as one piece, but individually the tracks as stand alone listens, nothing stands out. It's rather tame, the production is meh, and Jay although adept seems lazier than he usually is. Jay remains one of a few hip hop artists I still buy the records for as they come out. The only reason I'd give for someone to buy this is if you are completist like myself and just want to have all of his work in hardcopy. If not that thank Jobs for iTunes, just buy the tracks you like and leave the rest alone. If you are really ghetto, fuck it, just download it the ghetto way.
And the new Kanye album "Yeezus", it's really wack, definitely don't waste your money on that. I wouldn't even classify that as hip hop. What is this techno? EDM? Kanye is way too far gone for me now. His first three albums were great. His last three I think are pretty bad. He and his music have become rather spaced out, and I don't mean in a good Outkast or Neptunes type way, I just mean his music has become completely weird. Also where is all the content? This album comes in featuring a wopping ten tracks playing out over the duration of 40 minutes. Lazy. This is one to stay away from and definitely don't waste your money.
Commercial hip hop is now on life support, if two of the current giants are putting out efforts like these and their competition is way behind them, where does that leave us as consumers?
Thankfully hip hop is not completely dead, just hiding, underground. Enter Big Doxx. This is a brother from the Bronx I've been following for a long time and one of the best underground rappers in the game, untainted by commercial success and not rapping about shit that none of us normal people, especially black people aren't ever going to see in our lifetime. Seriously, who can relate to rhymes about a Bugatti Veyron? Even most commercial rappers aren't selling anywhere near the numbers artists were pushing back in the 90's, I don't even think they can afford Bugatti's. So WTF?
Big Doxx just put out his new album "Real Spit" today on Bandcamp and it's a free download. But I'd recommend for anyone to put in a small donation and support real music because this is that real, unadulterated hip hop with substance. Really puts both Jay-Z's and Kanye West's album to shame, the pair of those together couldn't make one of these. This is finally someone talking about something in relevancy to our lives. And not only are the lyrics good but the beats, this is hip hop and not that other worldly, genre bending, half techno, half electro shit, just hip hop, plain and simple. Go and get a copy of that and thank me later.
